Beautiful in God’s Eyes Day 4: Made in His Image

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27, ESV)

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139:13-14, ESV)

As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness. (Psalm 17:15, ESV)

You have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. (Colossians 3:9-10, ESV)

God doesn’t make mistakes. Yes, I know you’ve heard it before, but really think about it. When you look at yourself with hatred, you are hating the work of His hands. His Word reminds us that when God created the world, He formed man in His own image; He created us in His likeness. Just as He created many of the other beautiful things we admire in the world, His handiwork knit us together without a stitch out of place. No part of you is not according to His design.

He is not surprised by how you look. You are exactly who He expected you to be. The shape of your nose, the texture of your skin, the color of your eyes, and the curves of your body were all shaped intentionally by the Creator. How amazing is that! Take a moment to look at yourself and see what God has formed and how all of it works together to keep you alive. It’s truly remarkable! The same hands that sculpted the mountains, filled the sea, and speckled the sky with stars created you. What does this mean for us?

It’s a simple thought, but we don’t think it often enough: we are flawless. Yes, we are sinners and we are a broken and imperfect people, but our appearance is not flawed. The insecurities we have about our bodies were constructed by humankind and have changed and evolved as years have passed. God created you exactly as you are and He said it was good. That is enough to confirm that you are flawless. Not a freckle is out of place. Embrace the aspects of your body that make you different. Love the things that society tells you to hate about yourself. Admire God’s handiwork and go out in confidence, knowing that you are exactly what He created you to be.

Love yourself the way you are. If a little makeup makes you feel confident, go for it. If certain clothes feel more flattering than others, by all means wear them. But you must stop thinking that you are not beautiful. You have to go to war with the unrealistic beauty standards, the overwhelming expectations, and the comparison game. Remind yourself every time you begin to focus on a flaw that God knit you together. Remember that you are so much more than what society tells you that you are.

My challenge to you today is that you take captive every thought. Combat the voices in your head that are telling you you’re not thin enough or that your skin isn’t smooth enough. Look instead to God and remember that you are made in His image. Remind yourself as many times as it takes until you can look in the mirror and feel confident. Love what makes you…you!
