Beautiful in God’s Eyes Day 5: Life Beyond Looks
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:30, ESV)
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8, ESV)
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16, ESV)
Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:22-24, ESV)
The important thing to remember is appearance is not everything. God made us in His image, but He also made us for a purpose. Beauty is fleeting, but what we do with the time we have is remembered for eternity. Think of Christ and His time on earth. Remember, the Bible tells us that He was not attractive by the world’s standards. He didn’t come in the form of a man who was desirable to the world, but instead He came as a humble man who would serve others. His time was limited and He knew what He should use it for.
The world has its own expectations for us. We are supposed to look a certain way, dress in fashionable clothes, and have a fancy job to get us more money to spend on things to make us desirable. God has different expectations for us that He alone can and will help us achieve. He has given us this time on earth to trust Him and obey. He has given us the opportunity to share the good news of His gospel, and that is far more valuable than a life focused on appearance.
We are called to live for so much more than the meaningless expectations of the world. Daily He seeks to make us beautiful from the inside out. He wants to mold and shape us into a person with the character of Christ, if we are willing to let Him. When we release the expectations of the world and turn to Christ, we will find so much more joy and contentment. No earthly concoction can compare to the complete satisfaction that comes with knowing you are whole in Christ.
With hearts set on Christ and seeking the inward beauty that He alone can give us, we begin to see ourselves differently. We see ourselves not as the world sees us but as the person God created us to be. We can carry ourselves with confidence, knowing that we are fearfully and wonderfully made and that God is daily renewing us. Life is about so much more than looks. Life is about seeking to be more and more like Christ. Life is about showing the love of God to the world around you. I guarantee that when your life is centered around being more like Christ, you will become more and more beautiful to all who come to know you.
My challenge to you today is to exchange your thoughts of your appearance with thoughts of Christ. When the voices start to get too loud, remind them who your God is and what your purpose is on earth. You are so much more than your appearance. You are continuously being shaped and molded by God. You are being made beautiful from the inside out. Remember where your focus should be and turn your eyes upon Jesus.
