Christmas Advent 2: Preparing Our Hearts

Christmas Advent Day 2: Preparing Our Hearts

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10, ESV)

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8, ESV)

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:23)

And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 11:19, ESV)

I love that Christmas is celebrated at the end of a year. We all come together one last time to celebrate and enjoy time spent together as we head into a new year. We celebrate a new beginning with the birth of Jesus. In the midst of the rush and stress of it all, we can feel that glimmer of joy, knowing that we made it through another year and remembering that it was through Christ alone. Maybe your heart isn’t there yet. Maybe you are feeling the weight of the past year bearing down on your chest and it’s hard to feel anything but worry. Maybe you lost your way and your heart is filled with guilt and shame. There is no better time than now to give yourself a heart check—so let’s do one together.

The past few years have not been easy for any of us, to say the least. Many have lost loved ones who once filled a spot at the Christmas dinner table. Many have suffered from the stress and anxiety that seemed to build up by the day. Don’t sweep these big feelings under the rug to deal with after the holiday season. Today, take the time to breathe deeply and check in on where your heart is concerning the heartaches and heartbreaks from the past year. Allow yourself to feel them, but more importantly, bring them before God. Remember that all along He has been walking with you through it and He will continue to walk with you into the next year. Open up your heart to God and allow Him to fill it with His peace and comfort.

This year has been a long one, and maybe your feet have taken you somewhere you never expected or even wanted to be. Maybe over the course of the year you’ve lost your way a bit and you aren’t sure how to get back to God. I confess that’s far too easy a place to be. With so much happening, it can be easy to neglect our relationship with God and even make decisions that harm our spiritual growth. As always, no distance is too far for God to find you again. If the year has found you far from God, repent. Go to the Lord in prayer and confess your sins and own up to your mistakes. Be honest with Him, just as He wants you to be. Ask Him for help and guidance for the coming year. Remember the One we are celebrating this time of year and what He has done for you. He was born to die so that all your sins would be forgiven. Rest in His grace today and turn back to Him.

Now that you’ve checked your heart, it’s time to leave the door open and watch the Lord at work. With a clean heart and a focused mind, we will head into the new year filled with His goodness and grace. I, for one, can’t wait to see what He has in store for us.
