Devotional Thoughts for the Day 10: Appearances

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or his stature because I have rejected him. Humans do not see what the Lord sees, for humans see what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:7, CSB)

Today we are looking at the topic of our appearance. How much of our time and energy is consumed with how we look? From makeup to working out to shopping for the right clothes, and skincare and haircare, we (and specifically I) spend a lot of time thinking about how we look and pouring ourselves into all of it.

We focus on our appearance because it matters far too much in our world and even to the people we love. We begin to feel that our self-worth is dependent on our appearance. This is a lie from Satan! This way of thinking is so far off base and robs us of the joy and contentment we are meant to experience as children of God.

God made us and He sees us as beautiful and unique. But He cares far more about what is going on in our hearts and minds—that is where our true worth is found. He cares about how we feel about Him, how we treat others, how we think, and whether or not we have accepted His Son as our Savior. It’s in the depths of our souls that He sees… and this should give me pause.

How am I doing on the inside? And how much time am I spending making that part of me more like Jesus? How foolish I would feel when it all comes down to it if my life was spent thinking about my appearance and my heart was found lacking in how I served Christ.
