Devotional Thoughts for the Day 11: Impossibilities

Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, “Will I really have a child now that I am old?” Is anything too hard for the Lord?’” (Genesis 18:13,14, NIV)

In Genesis 18, we read about Sarah laughing at God’s promise regarding a son promised to her in her old age. As humans, we see how impossible this seems. How can a woman of 90 bear a child? This would surely be something miraculous. But when God is the Guarantor of a promise, it changes everything.

We read that Sarah and Abraham enjoyed that son of promise. In their weakness and limitations, it seemed like it could never happen, but that’s where God’s power shone through the brightest.

Sometimes God calls me to something that seems too big, too challenging or too impossible. Maybe I don’t laugh like Sarah did, but inwardly I think to myself, “This isn’t even a possibility for me!” But when these impossibilities arise, it’s great to go back to not only Scripture but also to my previous life experiences where God made good on His plans and promises to me.

When I remember His power and His faithfulness to me, I can trust that He will equip me for whatever He has called me to. The next time I think something is impossible or unreachable, my thoughts should go to Sarah and Abraham, where God did the impossible to fulfill His promise and display His great power.
