Devotional Thoughts for the Day 13: Inside and Outside

“Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16, CSB)

Our inner and outer persons are, interestingly, moving in opposite directions. This is something I’ve never really given much thought to, but our inner person is getting ready for abundant living, and our outer body is getting ready for death.

Our outer selves get weaker and degenerate as we age. What we once did with ease we now struggle to do. Our skin was once smooth and supple, but eventually it turns wrinkly and loose. Our bodies begin to grow feeble with illness and the weakness associated with old age.

But inside, for the believer, we are growing in beauty and strength. We are hopefully adding to the treasure and reward that await us on the other side of this life. As we grow closer to physical death, we grow closer to abundant living with Christ.

On days when we feel weary or weak, this hope of ours can push us forward. We don’t give up in this race of life because what is on the other side is the prize—a glorified body and a forever home in Heaven with our Savior. This is what we refer to as our “blessed hope,” and this hope propels us to run with purpose and grace.

So as we grow older and feel ourselves succumbing to the effects of aging, we know that investments in our spiritual life—our inner soul—enrich our eternal inheritance in Heaven. We may grow feeble in body, but our hearts and minds can continually develop and thrive. We understand that once we take our last breath, the best is yet to come for those of us who know Christ as Savior.
