Devotional Thoughts for the Day 3: Aging Bodies, Psalm 73:26

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26, ESV)

We’re talking today about how our bodies age and slowly, over time, become less able to do what they once did easily in our youth. It’s ironic, really, since just yesterday my husband and I spread nine yards of mulch together—mulch that was really wet and heavy. But our muscles are not as strong and supple as they once were, and we do not have the same stamina. So after this mulching work we spent our evening feeling fatigued and weary. What was once so easy is becoming more challenging as the years pass.

For some, aging comes with sickness or chronic pain, which can be so difficult to deal with. Those things can cause us to become discouraged and can lead to bitterness. Yet we have the promise that in our weaknesses, the Lord is our strength.

Sometimes what we need most is inner strength, and because the Lord is our strength, we can draw from Him. While our bodies may no longer cooperate or may cause us intense pain, we can rest in knowing the Lord will sustain us and see us through.

We can find encouragement and hope in looking toward our future—our forever home—where we will be at perfect peace, pain-free and able to do far more than our earthly bodies could handle. We will no longer be hampered by the limitations of our sinful flesh in a broken world.

The Lord is our Portion, always present with us and faithfully journeying with us in each trial we face. And we will one day be like Him and forever be with Him. This can help soothe our hearts when our physical body is weakening, painful or feeble. He alone is the “strength of our hearts.” He alone can give us inner peace when our physical bodies are warring against us. And we look to a day when we will finally be fully whole, at peace, and never feel pain or weakness again!
