Devotional Thoughts for the Day 5: Materialism

“And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’” (Luke 12:15, ESV)

Our devotional this morning is about choosing joy over money. Materialism is a big problem for our society, and specifically, it is an issue for me.

The desire to have nice things can consume our energy and focus, stealing the joy we should experience in Christ. Scripture tells us that we need to learn to be content with what we have.

The things we acquire eventually stop working, go out of style, or become obsolete. Then we have to replace, replace, replace. This is an exhausting and expensive way to live. And if we only find our joy here, we will constantly feel unsettled and dissatisfied.

This is why placing our joy is Christ is the wisest thing to do, because He can always be counted on to fill us.

This is a great reminder for me, as I often long for things when, in reality, Jesus is the only real answer to the longings of my heart.
