Devotional Thoughts for the Day 7: Sunday Selah – Boasting in Our Weakness

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV)

Our devotional topic this morning is about boasting in our weaknesses—something that is pretty countercultural. In our world today, boasting is a pretty common thing, but it’s almost always in areas of achievement and success.

We boast about what we bought that’s the very best. We boast about our kids and their accomplishments. We boast about vacations we took, the food we prepared, or even the intelligence of our pets.

But we don’t often make ourselves vulnerable by sharing our weak points with others. In fact, we often try to hide them so people won’t know we have areas of struggle. But Paul wrote about his own weakness—his thorn in the flesh—and how he surrendered that thorn to the Lord so that he could be humble and weak, and then allow Jesus to fill that weakness with His strength.

This became something worthy to boast about because it shows how in God we have an amazing source of strength. It allows us to do things we never imagined because His strength enables us. Sharing these areas of victory, even in our weakness, invites people to wonder at the power of our God! It is such a great way to share Him with others!
