Earthly Thorns That Trouble Us
Day 7- Sunday Selah
Daniel Petterson

“And twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head and put a reed in His right hand. And kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ And they spit on Him and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe and put His own clothes on Him and led Him away to crucify Him.” (Matthew 27:29-31, ESV)

Throughout this week, we’ve looked at metaphorical thorns that trouble us. But when it comes to our Lord Jesus, He dealt with literal thorns. I don’t believe He would have had to personally deal with most of the metaphorical thorns we’ve looked at; sickness, sin, and distractions certainly wouldn’t have affected Him. Finances could have, but it would be hard to draw that conclusion from His own words. But people, yeah, He dealt with that one. People were relentlessly pursuing His death, and this passage lays out the moments when they began to achieve their goal. In this moment, He dealt with what many of us would consider our worst nightmare.

First, the physical torment—a literal crown of thorns was pushed into His head. And then, a wooden stick (a reed) was used to beat the top of His head, further pressing in the thorns. Absolutely brutal! Add to that the humiliation of being spit on and openly mocked—what a dreadful scene. As we continue to catalog all He suffered, we are left to humbly bow, not in mockery, but in awe: He endured all of this because He loved us. On this day, as you gather with other Christians to meditate on Jesus, remember what He did for you. We’ve claimed to believe it—He died for me—so let it change our devotion and our love towards Him.
