Freedom Study 6: A Song for Saturday, “At Calvary”

The Freedom God Desires for Us Day 6 – A Song for Saturday, “At Calvary”

There are many places where we might look for freedom, but most will not bring about lasting freedom, even though we might hope they will. We’ve gotten a distorted mindset about what freedom is and where we might be able to find it, but this well-known hymn captures the essence of where to go for freedom: to Calvary.

At Calvary

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died
  On Calvary.
Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty,
    At Calvary.
By God’s Word at last my sin I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned
  To Calvary.
Now I’ve giv’n to Jesus everything,
Now I gladly own Him as my King,
Now my raptured soul can only sing
  Of Calvary.
Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span
  At Calvary!

(written by William Reed Newell)

Are you burdened and held captive to sin? Go to the cross, and there you’ll find the answers for peace and spiritual freedom—they are found in Christ alone.
