Goodnight, Sleep Tight Day 5: The Final Rest
Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also (John 14:1-3, ESV)
He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:3-4, ESV)
His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21, ESV)
What happens when we die? I often reflect on the fact that I do not have to fear this question that leaves many nonbelievers in existential crisis. While I may not have a complete picture of the afterlife, I know without a shadow of a doubt where I will be and Who I will be with when I pass on from this present life. For many, the thought of death is terrifying, but I have always admired it. The prospect of leaving a world infested with sin, hopelessness, and evil to rest completely in the arms of a loving God has helped me to get back up and keep pushing forward toward the prize.
The final rest brings complete rest; our work on earth is complete when we pass into eternity. There is no more night, no more sin, no more sorrow or pain. We are completely at rest. All turmoil ceases. Oh, what a beautiful thought! For the rest of eternity, we will live with Him and glorify Him in a perfect place. We finally come into the promise of rest that God has given to all who have believed in Him.
The final rest brings complete peace. What could there be to worry about in a perfect place? The answer is, of course, nothing. How amazing is that to think about! We will no longer spend nights tossing and turning with worries, doubts, and fears. We will no longer be battling with the world and our own flesh. Our fight will be over and we will be completely at peace. Other than being with God, this is what I look forward to the most about being in heaven. How wonderful it will be to dwell in complete peace and safety.
The final rest brings hope in present days. While we do not know when the final rest will come for us, we do know that we can look forward to it with hope and peace. As believers, we don’t have to fear death or life beyond this world because we already know Who is there and in control of it all. With this promise of peace and rest, we can take heart, knowing that the trials of this world are temporary. We can keep pressing on, doing the work He has for us, striving to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
My challenge to you today is to simply reflect on the coming rest. Let it fill you with peace and hope. Feel the comfort of a future that is secure and safe with Him. If you’ve been feeling beaten down, stand back up and keep pressing on with the knowledge of the complete rest that is waiting for you beyond time. What a wonderful hope we have in a future with Him, forever at peace!
