Interactive Devotion for Couples Day 5: Pray Together
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6, ESV)
If there is just one thing I would urge every married couple to do together, it’s to pray together. Pray for your marriage. Pray for one another. Pray for protection from the enemy. Pray for your family. Pray for your church family. Pray for opportunities to be used in spreading His gospel message. Give thanksgiving together when God provides. Give thanksgiving together when God restores.
In our marriage, my husband and I end every day together with prayer. We lift up the needs of not only ourselves but also of others. We join hands and come before the throne of grace, asking Him to step into our failures and our victories. We seek His counsel on things too big for us to handle on our own. We pray for the marriages of others that are in trouble. There are so many needs that we can bring before our all-powerful Father.
Never, ever stop praying for your marriage. The enemy seeks to destroy godly marriages—never underestimate him. Never take your marriage for granted; all marriages need daily prayer. Keep it fresh, covering the issues you are experiencing day by day. Ask, Jesus says, and you will receive. If we aren’t asking, we sure can’t expect to receive.
While it’s important that you each have your own private prayer life, it’s crucial that you make prayer the foundation of your marriage. It’s an essential building block to a firm foundation in Christ. If you are already reading Scripture together each night and not adding prayer time together, I challenge you to add it in as part of your couples’ devotional time. It will give a deeper intimacy in your marriage, and a fresh appreciation for seeing firsthand how He answers and provides. Don’t be afraid to be bold in your asking, for He promises to give more than we could ever ask or imagine. I know this to be true in my own marriage—a gift from God we greatly treasure. So I challenge you to make it a daily habit—a habit you won’t ever regret.
