Life’s Greatest Influences Day 6: Weekly Thoughts

Day 6: Weekly Thoughts

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. (Proverbs 9:9, ESV)

Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray. (Proverbs 10:17, ESV)

We have been studying those who have great influence in our lives. From our parents, to our friends, to the world around us, and especially to Christ, we have many who play a huge role in shaping us. We can be influenced for good, or we can ignore good influences, causing us to travel down a road that leads to heartache, missed opportunity, spiritual and emotional ruin, and even death.

We are all influencers. You may have children influenced by you, friends you influence, co-workers you influence, or others who observe your behavior and are impacted by it. When we stop to consider this, we realize the huge responsibility we have in how we behave. People are watching us and making observations based on our words and our attitudes; these observations will be tied to the word “Christian.” How do we wish to influence others? I imagine none of us really set out to be a bad influence, but oftentimes we end up having a negative impact when we fail to behave in a way that reflects Christ.

May each of us become better mothers, fathers and friends and allow God’s influence to change us for our good. The world seeks to impact us negatively, but we know from Scripture that we have a greater power within us—the Holy Spirit—than the power of this world (Satan). May we be encouraged to spend time with God, and give evidence of our testimony as Christ-followers.
