Living the Mom Life Day 6: Help Them See You in Me

And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is none holy like the LORD: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. (1 Samuel 2:1-2, ESV).

Early on, Hannah shows us that she was a woman of godly character. Imagine sharing a husband with another woman (that alone would be too much for me), and the other woman is able to have children while you are not. Not only that, but the other woman insists on deriding you about it! Hannah’s life was not an easy one, but instead of becoming bitter and angry, Hannah poured out her heart to God. She didn’t care what she looked like (in fact, Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk); she just wanted God to hear her cries. She even promised God that if He would bless her with a son, she would give him back to the Lord for all the days of his life. God answered her prayer, and Hannah kept her promise. When Samuel was old enough, she left him at the temple with Eli to live in service to God; and “the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man” (1 Samuel 2:26). God also went on to bless Hannah with three more sons and two daughters.

Why would a young boy willingly go live in a temple and see his family only once a year? Because he understood the importance of it from his mother. No doubt Hannah explained to Samuel about his miraculous birth and the promise she had made to God. By her life and actions, she was showing Samuel how important God was in their lives. If you look around, it’s not too difficult to figure out what is important to people. Some people love to have a beautifully landscaped home. You can usually see them outside working away in their yard, tending to their flowers and shrubs and pulling out weeds. It’s important to them to have a well-manicured lawn, and they will put in the time necessary to maintain it. Other people might enjoy fishing; you will see them taking care of their boat and fishing rods and waking up early to catch the best fish. These things are important to them, and anyone watching them can see it. Our children are no different. They will notice what is important to you by how you spend your time. Do you make time to read the Bible and pray? Do you provide your children with Bibles? Do you make time for church? Do you talk about God regularly? All these little things show your children that God and His Word are important to you. They will get to know and understand God by your words and actions.

Along with where and how we spend our time, the way we treat others around us and the words that come out of our mouths are also ways in which we can help our children see Jesus. Are we willing to help those in need? Do we speak kindly about people? God will provide you with opportunities to show His love to your children and to other people as well, if you are willing. Take those opportunities, as they will be a blessing both to you and to the little eyes that are watching your every move.
