Mornings with Maddie Day 11 – Praying for Rescue

“With my voice I cry out to the Lord;
with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.
I pour out my complaint before him;
I tell my trouble before him.

I cry to you, O Lord;
I say, ‘You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.’”

Psalm 142:1-2,5

We read in this psalm of David, in need of refuge, calling out to the Lord. David didn’t have another way out, and that was actually a good thing. It was good because he had no other option or anything to distract him from seeking refuge only in the Lord.

Often we seek refuge in so many other places. We pour ourselves into our jobs or our relationships, focus on social media, and do pretty much anything else except rely on the Lord. But He is the only One who offers true refuge.

I recently read a devotional that reminded us that prosperity can sometimes numb our need for God. I love this quote from Charles Spurgeon: “Had David prayed as much in the palace as he did in his cave, he might never have fallen into the act which brought such great misery upon his later days.”

What a powerful quote to remind us that there is never a point when we’ve “prayed enough” or when we can “handle things on our own.” Daily we need to remind ourselves of our need to rely on Him and make sure our prayers reflect that. He is always able to rescue us, but we must first be willing to ask for His help.
