Mornings with Maddie Day 3 – Gossip
“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. … We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” (1 John 5:14,18-19, ESV)
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17, ESV)
Today we are talking about something many of us struggle with: the sin of gossip. This may seem like one of the less serious sins—it’s not like we are murdering someone or tearing apart families by our actions. I can fall into the trap of thinking it’s not that big of a deal, or make excuses for it.
Sin is a constant battle in our lives, and it’s something we need to deal with. Even though we may be saved, we still have our flesh, our natural tendency toward sin, that wrestles against our desire for godly living. We don’t yet have the sinless perfection we will experience in heaven, and while still here on earth we’re in a battle against our flesh.
The sin of gossip stands in the way of our intimacy with Christ and is a roadblock in our prayer life. Maybe we think we just can’t help it, but here’s the thing—we can overcome it, with the help of the Lord. The first step toward success is simply making it a habit to stop when we find ourselves beginning to gossip, instead of falling into old habits and patterns that don’t honor the Lord.
We are not alone in our struggle; I’m so thankful for that. We can pray for help in whatever sin we struggle with and know with confidence that God hears us. Not only does He hear us, but He is with us as we daily fight against it.
May we not grow weary in fighting the many spiritual battles we face in this world. As we taste victory in our struggles, may we give all honor and glory to Him.
