Patriotic Hymns of Faith 2: “God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand”

Patriotic Hymns of Faith Day 2 – “God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand” by Daniel C. Roberts

This hymn was written in 1876 for the celebration of the 100year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Mr. Roberts wrote this piece for a small patriotic event being held in Vermont. Originally, a different tune was used, but in 1892 George W. Warren wrote the music we now know for this song and it gained popularity.

The stirring lyrics of this hymn ask God to continue His protection upon us, just as He has done in the past. Again, it struck me how revered God once was in our country. He had preserved them in the past and they readily acknowledged and appreciated that truth. This mindset is sadly missing in many Americans today. Many in our nation are turning their backs on God, our Creator, and it is evidenced in the moral demise of a great country, one that was once built on biblical principles.

For those of us who continue to serve and embrace the “God of our fathers,” may we have the courage to boldly stand and honor Him in whatever way we can. As long as we have breath, may we give Him glory and praise, and willingly tell others the beautiful message of the gospel. This world can make us tired and weary, but He alone can refresh us, His cherished people!

“God of Our Fathers, Whose Almighty Hand”

  1. God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
    Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
    Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies,
    Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.
  2. Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
    In this free land by Thee our lot is cast;
    Be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide and stay,
    Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.
  3. From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
    Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
    Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
    Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.
  4. Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
    Lead us from night to never-ending day;
    Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
    And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.
