Peace on Earth Day 31 – A New Year’s Eve Selah
“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)
As we close out 2023, we look behind us and see good things, and also hard things—situations that challenged us or maybe even broke our hearts. Yet as we launch into a new year, we must pause and reflect on our blessings as God’s people. These blessings should give us a sense of peace.
God has plans for each of us, and if you’re still here to celebrate another New Year, then God still has plans for you! His plans are good—plans to prosper and that won’t bring harm, plans that give hope and a future. I sometimes get the mindset that if things happened according to my timeline they would be just perfect. Yet God’s plan is according to His timing, and His timing will always be better than anything I could imagine.
I want to challenge each of you to think of ways in which God has worked in your life in 2023. You may have experienced some difficult things this year—sickness, family struggles, financial hardship, and so on. I am not making light of the situation you are in, but I want to challenge you to see the “good” from 2023. Maybe it was an uplifting sermon you heard at church, connecting with a friend or a family member, a promotion at work, memories that bring a smile to your face. I find that when I start writing them down, I remember more and more things that make me appreciate His many blessings.
As we head into the New Year, may we live with the knowledge that He has a plan for our good. We can make plans and goals for 2024 (and I am all for having a nice plan), but we must remember that He is sovereign and His plan will always be best. Now let’s celebrate as we head into 2024, and remember that as long as we have breath, we can honor Him and live out the plan He has for each and every one of us!
