Responsibilities of the Church Day 21 – Sunday Meditations: The Pardoning God

“Great God of Wonders”

Great God of wonders! All Thy ways
Display Thine attributes divine;
But the bright glories of Thy grace
Above Thine other wonders shine.

Who is a pardoning God like Thee?
Or who has grace so rich and free?

Such deep transgressions to forgive!
Such guilty, daring worms to spare!
This is Thy grand prerogative,
And in this honour none shall share.

Pardon from an offended God!
Pardon for sins of deepest dye!
Pardon bestowed through Jesus’ blood!
Pardon that brings the rebel nigh!

  -Samuel Davies (1723–1761)

I love the line of this hymn, “Who is a pardoning God like Thee?” We began our Sunday worship meeting singing this song, and I think it’s a wonderful reminder of how much we’ve been forgiven. During the week, we get so caught up in our busy schedules, checking everything off the to-do list. We forget that we are sinners in need of Christ’s saving grace every moment of every day. We forget what our lives should be centered around—honoring and serving Him. Today, may we worship Him with hearts full of adoration and praise while remembering that He is a pardoning God who loves us with unconditional love and showers us with endless grace and mercy.
