“It Is Well With My Soul”

I will never forget singing this hymn at the funeral of a dear friend who lost her battle with cancer. In our estimation, she was called from this earth far too soon. The mark she left on each life in that packed the church that day was palpable.

But the occasion was far from somber! Instead, it was a boisterous, joyful celebration to praise the Lord for a well-lived life, so beautifully and perfectly used by Him to touch hearts and draw so many to Jesus. It was a “Home-going party” filled with singing. And I do mean singing—the kind that compels you to stand and join in!

As the voices swelled around me, even as we sobbed our way through several of the lyrics, I never remembered singing with a fuller voice or a fuller heart. The reality we know deep within, even when our worst nightmare unfolds, even when leaving this earthly scene brings sorrow and pain, is that because of our Savior, it is well with our souls! Because of the Lord Jesus, death brings life and joy and hope and peace!

May today be the day you join the chorus and sing with full assurance and a full voice from a heart full of praise and confidence, “It is well with my soul!”
