Day 27 – Our Favorite Gospel Hymns: Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary

As a young mom, I remember hauling around a car seat with my baby safely buckled in it. That seat awkwardly hung, swinging back and forth under the strain of one arm. The other arm likely held an overpacked 15-lb. diaper bag ready for any situation. I was always prepared with extra clothing, diapers, medicine, toys, bottles, snacks—you name it! I remember the feeling of relief when setting down both the seat and the bag, freeing myself of that burden. Yet that burden doesn’t even begin to compare to the spiritual burden of my sin that I once had; that weight was the heaviest I’ve ever carried.

Each child of God at one time experienced the heavy burden of sin weighing them down, having no ability to lighten that load. It felt crushing and overwhelming. The effects of our sin lay heavily upon our spirit, exposing a need greater than we ever experienced before—our need for relief and rescue from our sin. But then Jesus beckoned us to cast that heavy burden at the foot of the cross; He offered to take our burden upon Himself and give us freedom!

Has there ever been a place more freeing than Calvary? Has there ever been a sweeter moment than when we found our Redeemer, when the weight lifted from us and we were finally free?

Might we enjoy the words of this beautiful hymn, written by John M. Moore in 1925. Approaching 100 years since he penned these words, they are no less thrilling today. If your burden of sin is weighing you down, there is only one place you’ll find true freedom—Calvary!

Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary

Days are filled with sorrow and care;
Hearts are lonely and drear.
Burdens are lifted at Calvary;
Jesus is very near.

Refrain:
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Calvary, Calvary;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary;
Jesus is very near.

Cast your care on Jesus today;
Leave your worry and fear;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary;
Jesus is very near.

Troubled soul, the Saviour can see
Ev’ry heartache and tear.
Burdens are lifted at Calvary;
Jesus is very near.
