Showing Self-Compassion Day 7: Sunday Selah
When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. (Mark 6:34, ESV)
When we think of compassion, we naturally turn our thoughts toward the Lord Jesus. If ever there was an example of compassion, it is our Savior, which He so perfectly displayed for us to see. It is only through His compassionate character that our rescue from sin’s penalty is possible. In all honesty, we don’t deserve grace or forgiveness; what we deserve is death and hell. But because God is loving and has compassion on us, He made a way possible for our redemption through the death of His Son on the cross.
As we gather today to worship our Lord, may our hearts be touched with the compassion He has shown us. We are no longer facing the judgment and punishment for our sins; instead, we have been adopted into the family of God and have the promise of eternal life. As His children, we have an inheritance in heaven that’s more than anything we could even begin to imagine. All of this is possible because He chose to show us compassion.
May we, as Christ-followers, show compassion to those around us as we seek to live in a way that reflects His Spirit within us. May we see those who need a compassionate friend and draw near to offer encouragement and help, with the desire that they would long to know the source of our compassion—Jesus! In doing this, we show appreciation to Christ for all He accomplished for us. Thank Him today for the compassion He has shown you, and ask Him to show you ways to demonstrate it in your community and area of influence.
