The Gospel Is . . . Day 5 – The Gospel Is for Anyone
“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13, ESV)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” (John 5:24)
I saw the wedding invitation on her kitchen counter. Any woman is naturally drawn to a wedding invite; we love beautiful things and beautiful events—at least I do. But when my nosy self had a better look, I saw the names printed on the invitation. Hmm, I thought to myself, I wonder how long she’s had this. And so I asked, because I couldn’t help myself. A month! So, clearly, I am not being invited. I feel a little annoyed to be left out and upset that I didn’t make the cut.
All of us have had moments when we didn’t feel included. Maybe you’ve experienced that same thing with a wedding invitation. Maybe you weren’t chosen to be in the cool group at school. Or maybe you didn’t make the soccer team when it seemed all your friends did. Maybe you didn’t qualify for the scholarship that would have answered your prayers to attend the university of your dreams, and now you can’t afford to go. Or maybe you didn’t get invited to the graduation party everyone from school was going to. Whatever the case, it hurts to be left out. This is one reason the gospel is so special, because it’s available for anyone—all who will simply come to Christ.
The gospel is the greatest invitation ever made to mankind. It’s the only invitation that has an impact on us forever—with the biggest part of forever remaining after we take our last breath. There is no cost to us, yet a tremendous price was already paid with the blood of Jesus. We don’t have to do anything ourselves; the work was all accomplished by Christ on the cross. And yet the staggering truth is this: too many will never accept the invitation of the gospel.
What has been your response to the invitation of Jesus? Have you ignored the invitation, planning to make your decision later in life when you have more time to think about it? Is it sitting somewhere on your to-do list, yet far from your mind currently? Or maybe you aren’t even aware that the invitation includes you. If that’s the case, let me reiterate what Scripture teaches: it does include you! You’re invited!
Those of us who have accepted the invitation of the gospel have no regrets. It’s not only life-changing, but it’s life-giving. We have a peace that cannot be found anywhere apart from Him. We have eternal security—a spot in our heavenly home. We have the gift of the Holy Spirit which offers us every bit of help we need to navigate the difficulties of life. And we have the burden of our sin and its consequences off our shoulders.
I encourage you to take a closer look at the gospel invitation today. We do not know when we will take our last breath; our lives are not guaranteed past this moment. He has invited you to come, to believe on Him and the work He accomplished on the cross. What is your answer? He would long for you to surrender to Him and simply come. It’s our prayer that you’ll do just that, today!
