The Holy Spirit Study 11: Our Friend

The Holy Spirit Today Day 11 – Our Friend

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15, ESV)

“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24, ESV)

Perhaps one of the more endearing functions of the Holy Spirit is that of “Friend.” This may be because friendship is a relationship we are familiar with; it’s a comfortable bond that seems to put us on even soil. Being friends with the Spirit may cloud our view of Him and make us think of Him as being “like us,” which He is not—He is far, far above us. Nonetheless, His friendship to us is a beautiful gift, one I immensely value and appreciate.

Before we spend time meditating on His friendship toward us, we must put things in proper perspective. The Spirit is part of the Trinity—He is one with God. He is holy. He is righteous. He is just. He is Creator. He is Judge. So while it’s true that He calls Himself our Friend, we must recognize that this isn’t a casual friendship like those we enjoy with humans. He must still be given a place of honor and respect because He is God in Spirit.

And maybe that’s why His friendship with us is so startling. It humbles me to think that the Holy Spirit desires friendship with little old me. It’s truly amazing! He could choose anyone or no one, and yet He desires this connection with me. What an honor!

I’ve had some challenging seasons in which a Friend was just what I needed most. While earthly friends are wonderful and a blessing, they also have their own shortcomings and challenges, making them unavailable to me at times. What beauty there is in knowing that in those sleepless nights at 2 a.m., I have a Friend who sticks closer than a brother. He hears me. He ministers to the needs of my heart. He tenderly cares for me in ways that always warm me. This friendship is unlike any other, and this Friend never lets me down.

The Holy Spirit isn’t some elusive figure, detached and disinterested. He is interested in all that is going on in my life and draws close when my soul is in distress or my heart is troubled. He speaks to me through His Word, giving me Scriptures to hold onto and offers me comfort and hope through them. While He does so much for me, how far short I often fall on my end of the friendship. I can be guilty of taking far more than giving. I can make our talks together too much about me and not enough about Him.

A good friendship works both ways. May I remember all He has done, and continues to do, for me. May this truth fuel my own heart in reaching for Him, praising Him, thanking Him, and declaring my love for Him all the rest of my days. What a privilege it is to be called His friend, and what an incredible blessing it is to call Him “my Friend.”
