The Holy Spirit Study 2: How and When We Receive the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit Today Day 2 – How and When We Receive the Holy Spirit

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23, ESV)

“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14, ESV)

“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 2:38, ESV)

Do you have that one friend, companion, or family member who has stuck with you through it all? Those kinds of people are so special to have in our lives, but today I want to talk to you about the presence of the Holy Spirit. We may have those people we can always rely on, but what about when we are tossing and turning at 3:00AM—what if we can’t reach that person when we need them?

When we are saved, we receive the Holy Spirit and have God’s presence with us everywhere we go. No matter what time of day, no matter what the circumstance, we have the promise He is there with us.

Many of you reading this are likely familiar with the Holy Spirit and understand that He is already within you. For those who may not be as familiar, I want to back up and answer how and when we actually receive the Holy Spirit. We aren’t just born into this world with God’s Spirit indwelling us, but rather we are each born sinners in need of a Savior. We read in Romans 3 that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But I’m so thankful that the message doesn’t end there. Jesus came down to this world to die for us, and He wants us to accept His precious gift of salvation.

Now you might think, how does this relate to the Holy Spirit? In Ephesians 1, we read, “When you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, [you] were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit…” (vs. 13). This passage makes it very clear that we receive the Holy Spirit at the exact moment of salvation. There are no extra steps needed after salvation in order for us to receive the Holy Spirit. We don’t have to be baptized or join a local church for His Spirit to come dwell inside of us either. It is such a comfort to me that we are immediately given the gift of the Holy Spirit, and that we can constantly and faithfully experience His tremendous empowering presence with us.

I don’t want to delve too much into more details of the Holy Spirit as we are saving those for future days in this study. Today’s takeaway is the beauty of knowing that once we receive the Holy Spirit, He will never leave us. Never! There’s nothing you could ever do, nothing you could ever say that would cause the Spirit to be removed from you.
I think it’s so special that we have the presence of God with us each day to help guide and teach us the will of God through His Word. It’s truly such a tremendous blessing. Accept Jesus as your Savior today, and you have the same promise of having the Holy Spirit forever!
