Tools to Thrive as a Man of God Day 1: Purpose
“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11, ESV)
What does it mean to be a man of God? How can we succeed in living up to the standard that God has set for us? How can we fulfill our purpose? Every man of God that wants to be a faithful follower of Christ wrestles with these questions. Over the course of this study, we will look at some simple tools that every man of God should have in his toolbox to help him thrive in his Christian experience.
The first tool we are going to look at is understanding God’s purpose for us as godly men. If you are like me, you have at one time or another obsessed over knowing God’s will. Who should I marry? Where should I live? How many kids should I have? What should I be doing in the local church? These are but a few of the questions I wrestled with over the years. These are certainly important questions and, in some cases, major life decisions that need to be sorted out. However, I would challenge us to look at God’s will a bit differently.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to focus on obeying God’s will by obeying His Word. The Bible clearly lays out God’s will for how a Christian should live. My first priority in life is to study God’s Word and seek to apply it to my life every day.
No matter what phase of life we are in, God has laid out instructions for how to be a man of God. 1 Timothy 6:11 gives men of God a great challenge. As men, so often we can be consumed with gaining power and wealth. We want to move up the corporate ladder and create a good life for ourselves or potentially for our family. It’s so easy to allow this to become a priority in our lives. However, if we read the whole chapter in 1 Timothy 6, we will see that he is warning us of the danger of having a love of money. Instead, he tells us to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” Even if our role changes to include husband or father, 1 Timothy gives us the secret to thriving as a man of God in those roles as well.
Satan is always going to tempt us men of God. He will never give up his pursuit, which is why there is one last word I want us to focus on in 1 Timothy 6:11—pursue. As men of God, we cannot become lazy in our service for Him. If we want to fulfill our purpose, we must actively pursue the things that will help us build godly character. When Satan sees a Christian standing still, we’ve made it easier for him to attack us. We must move forward in allowing God to continue working out His purpose in our lives.
As men of God, these are the things that are worth investing our time in. This is how we can fulfill our purpose. No matter what other plans God may have for our lives, we must first give Him a foundation to build on. God has promised to do amazing things with any child who humbly submits to His will. The question is—will we?
