Walking a Disciple’s Walk, Day 14: Sunday Selah 2

(Forsaking Convenient Lies to Follow the Lord)

Day 14, Sunday Selah 2
Ashley Walczek

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”
Jude 1:24-25

We have spent the past two weeks assessing how we should walk as disciples of Jesus Christ. We have considered the journey’s pitfalls and pleasures, the jagged edges of the path and the joys that await us at our destination. However, greater than anything else we have talked about, we must allow the Lord to impress this truth from Jude’s letter on our hearts the most. God is able to keep us from falling! God is able to present us faultless before His glory! He is able—when we are not.

On the Lord’s Day, we celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection and we turn our minds toward the salvation we have received because of Him. This weekly reminder of our utter dependence on Christ in the moment of salvation should also serve as a reminder of our dependence on Him for every single moment of our lives as we seek to follow Him. We were dead in our sins, but He made us alive (Ephesians 2:4-6)! In the same way, our efforts to walk after Him will come to nothing if we do not trust that He is able to sustain us until we have made it home.

We are not able to walk the costly road of discipleship without the promised presence of our Lord beside us. Our stumbling steps are nothing without His sovereign hand leading us and steadying us at every moment. When we reach the end, He will receive all the glory, majesty, dominion, and power. After casting any crowns we have at His feet, all that we receive will be the smile of His face, the love of His heart, and the joy of His nearness, and that will undoubtedly be enough to satisfy us for eternity.

“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”
By Charles Wesley

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heav’n to earth come down,
fix in us Thy humble dwelling;
all Thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love Thou art;
visit us with Thy salvation;
enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit,
let us find the promised rest.
Take away our love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver;
let us all Thy life receive;
suddenly return and never,
nevermore Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve Thee as Thy hosts above;
pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,
glory in Thy perfect love.

Finish then, Thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see Thy great salvation
perfectly restored in Thee.
Changed from glory into glory,
till in heav’n we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before Thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
